Okay, it’s that time of year again when people “celebrate” Cinco de Mayo. Sigh, here’s what people fail to understand. Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day. Mexican independence is celebrated Sept.16. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla. How this became a holiday “celebrated” in the States and not in Mexico is beyond me. I guess to paraphrase a classic Paul Mooney joke, ” Everyone wants to be a Mexican, but no one wants to be a Mexican”. Check out the PBS video you can show your friends and settle the truth about Cinco de Mayo. Most people use this day as an excuse to drink; true connoisseurs like myself NEVER need an excuse to drink. Enjoy the video and drink responsibility IF you’re the designated driver. If not, let loose!
